Suren Arul, MD FRCS(Paeds)

Consultant Paediatric Surgeon at Birmingham Children’s Hospital

Royal Army Medical Corps

I am a paediatric surgeon with a major interest in surgical oncology, laparoscopy, congenital anomalies and major trauma.  Birmingham Children’s Hospital is now, arguably the largest children’s hospital in the UK; for instance we treat approximately 10% of all UK children’s cancer here.  Our work on percutaneous ultrasound guided vascular access has proven this approach can be used for any age or size of child and helped change practice around the world.

I am the surgeon on the national germ cell tumour working group and am involved in the international collaborative (MAGIC) on germ cell tumours.

Other academic interests included the management battlefield injuries in children, damage control surgery and human factors in the operating theatre.

Life outside work includes a wife (Kate), 3 children, 5 chickens, a dog, gardening, baking, and as the leader of our local village scout troop.
